Base Ingredients for Fire Cider

Raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar

The foundation of this herbal vinegar tonic. Finding a good quality raw ACV is essential. I generally order mine from Azure Standard in large-gallon jugs.

Fresh horseradish root, ginger root, turmeric root, and garlic cloves

Essential for their immune-boosting and anti-inflammatory properties.These ingredients can sometimes be hard to find. Use what you have available and in the best quality. I’ve also used dried root herbs for this with good results.

When writing this blog post, in December, I could not find horseradish root locally.

Spicy peppers

Use jalapeño or chili peppers to give the tonic a kick and enhance its warming effects. These are best found in your own garden.

Obviously, peppers do not grow in cold temperatures, so try making this recipe with peppers from your garden in August or September in preparation for the cooler months.

Raw honey or maple syrup

Adds a touch of sweetness to balance the heat. Raw honey will also add in more healing properties.

Black peppercorns

Improves turmeric’s absorption and boosts the recipe’s medicinal value. If you’re using turmeric root, this is an essential ingredient.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Gather Your Ingredients

Head to your grocery store or herb garden to collect the ingredients for this fire cider recipe: onion, garlic, jalapeño or cayenne peppers, turmeric root, horseradish root, ginger root, raw apple cider vinegar, and raw honey.

Prepare a Clean Jar

Use a clean mason jar or jar with a metal lid to hold your ingredients. Make sure the jar is large enough to fit everything comfortably.

Chop the Solid Ingredients

Chop the onion, garlic, peppers, horseradish, turmeric, and ginger into small pieces to release their medicinal properties.

Add the Ingredients to the Jar

Place all the chopped ingredients into your jar, filling it about halfway or more.

Pour the Raw Apple Cider Vinegar

Pour the raw apple cider vinegar into the jar until all the solid ingredients are fully submerged. This helps to extract the medicinal compounds from the herbs.

Seal and Shake

Seal the jar with a metal lid and give it a good shake to mix everything together. Use parchment paper as a barrier to the metal lid to prevent oxidation with the vinegar. See picture below.

Store in a Cool, Dark Place

Place the jar in a cool, dark place for 2–4 weeks. I’ve left mine alone for 2 or more months before straining and the results were phenomenal.

Shake the jar occasionally to help the ingredients infuse into the vinegar.

Strain and Store

Once the infusion process is complete, strain out the solid ingredients and add raw honey to taste for a little sweetness. Your fire cider tonic is ready to use! 

Take a small shot of it daily to support your immune system, or use it to soothe sore throats and fight off flu symptoms. 

Feel free to customize with optional medicinal herbs or other ingredients to tailor the recipe to your needs.

  • 1 half-gallon jar with airtight lid
  • 1 Strainer
  • parchment paper
  • 1 jar for final storage

Ingredients
  

  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 10 garlic cloves smashed
  • 2-3 fresh jalapeño or cayenne peppers chopped
  • 1-2 inches fresh turmeric root sliced
  • 1-2 inches fresh horseradish root chopped
  • 2 inches fresh ginger root sliced
  • 1 quart 4 cups raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar enough to cover all ingredients once in the jar.
  • 2 tablespoons raw honey or maple syrup, to taste

Instructions
 

  • Prepare a clean half-gallon mason jar (64 ounces) and attach an airtight metal lid.
  • Chop the solid ingredients (onion, garlic, peppers, turmeric, horseradish, ginger) into small pieces and add them to the jar.
  • Pour raw apple cider vinegar into the jar until all the solid ingredients are submerged.
  • Seal the jar with the metal lid and give it a good shake.
  • Store in a cool, dark place for 2–4 weeks, shaking occasionally.
  • After steeping, strain out the solids using a strainer and transfer the fire cider into a glass bottle for storage.
  • Sweeten with raw honey or maple syrup to taste, if desired.
